There are TWO magnifying glasses in the park — and detective Bobo has only ever owned one! One is scratched and chipped, one is shiny and perfect. So which one is the real one? Bobo blames the scratchy one, hides it in a bush, and even gives it away to little Milo. But when the evening sun drops low, every little scratch starts to tell its story — and the search leads from the park to Fern's cosy kitchen, where a jar of biscuits gets involved.

- Bobo That was fieldwork.
- Bobo My ruling. The scratched one is the fake.
- Pim Or the scratched one's the one that's been USED. By you. For years.
- Bobo The fake goes in the bush. Nobody touches it.
- Pim You've put the evidence in a bush.
- Bobo I've FILED it.
- Milo Can I have the scratchy one, then? Nobody wants it.
- Bobo Yours, Milo. For keeps.
- Milo Look! My eye's ENORMOUS!
- Narrator He had just given away the only real thing in the case.
- Bobo Whoever made it got it PERFECT. Perfect means they've HELD mine.
- Bobo They crept in. Like this. Creep... creep... creep.
- Pim That's a duck walk.
- Bobo It's a CREEP.
- Bobo Fern hears everything.
- Fern This jar's been shut since Tuesday.
- Bobo Fern. Somebody's copying me.
- Narrator Three of them. On the shelf under the window. Nobody turned round.
- Fern Copying you. Hm. Open my jar and be useful.
- Fern Bobo, don't you DARE use that as a —
- Bobo There. Biscuits.
- Pim It's got a mark now. Right across the glass.
- Bobo It'll polish out.
- Pim Fern?
- Fern Nothing. It's nothing at all.
- Narrator It was not nothing.
- Pim The sun's dropped low. Grey light hides marks — low light shows EVERY one.
- Pim Both of them. Outside. Now.
- Fern Four.
- Milo Bobo! I've been a detective ALL afternoon!
- Milo I found an ant carrying a STICK!
- Bobo Not now, Milo.
- Pim Both of them down. Where the light's coming across.
- Pim One mark. One. And it happened this afternoon.
- Bobo ...That one's mine. I did that one.
- Pim One afternoon, one mark. So how many afternoons is a HUNDRED marks?
- Milo LOADS.
- Bobo Years.
- Pim A thing gets its marks by being used. The battered one's yours. The perfect one was MADE.
- Bobo I hid it. I gave it away. I opened a JAR with the other one.
- Pim Everything you can SEE from far off — right. Everything up close — wrong.
- Pim So they've never HELD it. Somebody who watches from far away.
- Pim Who do YOU think it is?
- Fern Don't look at it. It isn't finished.
- Bobo FERN?
- Milo It's ENORMOUS!
- Fern I've never held yours. Not once.
- Fern I made four. Three are on my shelf. You stood in my kitchen with all four.
- Bobo And I opened a JAR with one.
- Fern Every week, somebody knocks on my window. 'Where are the detectives?'
- Fern Your sign has words. Nobody reads words from across the park. This one, they CAN read.
- Bobo It's perfect.
- Fern Four days, it took me.
- Bobo That's the problem with it.
- Fern You DROPPED it!
- Bobo There. Now it's ours.
- Pim A thing gets its marks by being used.
- Fern On the tree, then. Where everybody comes in.
- Ollie I shall keep an eye on it from my branch. I am extremely good at that.
- Bobo Case closed. Two magnifiers, one owner, and one ENORMOUS sign.
- Fern Knock for a biscuit. Not for directions.
